Jesus is the Life-Giving Food

Readings: Acts 8:1b-8; Jn 6:35-40

Today’s readings give us the foundational steps to Christian faith. In Acts, we learned about Church being persecuted by Saul and others and about the miracles in the name of Jesus. “I am the bread of life” tells us that we never lack food in our lives. Jesus assures us with confidence that we need to abide in him to get this eternal food forever. Jesus further says, “For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him on the last day.”

Jesus reveals who he is to his disciples and to us. He begins to teach about the Eucharist. He lays out the fact that our souls will never be hungry or thirsty if we come to him. The rest of the chapter explains even further how Jesus is the “living bread” and how his flesh is real food, and his blood is real drink.

As Catholics, we believe that Jesus instituted the Eucharist. We demonstrate our belief each time we receive the body and blood of Christ in Holy Communion. Each Eucharist reminds us that Jesus is a life-giving food for us. So, let us pray for God’s grace upon each of us so we may grow in faith and be rooted in Christ.
