Jesus Talks About Fulfilling the Law

Readings: Kgs 18: 20-39; Mt 5: 17-19

The first reading vividly portrays the power of worshiping the true God, as demonstrated on Mount Carmel in the confrontation between the prophet Elijah and the prophets of Baal. Elijah, the true prophet of God, calls the people to worship the Lord, leading to a dramatic contest between himself and the prophets of Baal regarding a bull sacrifice.

Ultimately, the people witness the miraculous intervention of God, leading to the downfall of the worshipers of Baal, prompting them to fall prostrate in worship of the true God. This reading urges us to embrace God’s teachings radically, with a deep awareness of our humanity.

In the gospel reading, Jesus as part of his Sermon on the Mount, speaks about the relationship between his teachings and the Jewish law. Jesus clarifies that he has not come to abolish the law or the prophets but to fulfil them. He teaches that all laws and precepts find their beginning and end in Him, with no alternative. His teaching and mission, foretold in the Old Testament, are completed in the gospel. Jesus invites everyone to His kingdom, regardless of status, colour, or background. His inclusive teaching embraces all, leaving no one excluded from His kingdom.
