Readings: Deut: 34: 1-12; Mt 18: 15-20
Today’s first reading speaks about the final days of Moses. Before his death God made him to see the promised land in its entirety.
Moses died, but God remained with his people for the whole of their journey. Similarly, Jesus is always with his followers in their journey towards the fullness of life. Even if only two or three are gathered in his name he will be there to promote unity.
The Gospel passage reminds us that we must seek unity in Jesus’ name confronting divisiveness. There can be tendencies to give up after a divisive member of the family or community refuses reconciliation. Jesus wants us to reach out to that member in all the possible ways to restore relationship. Human nature avoids and slow in admitting wrong. A humble, loving, and caring visit to seek reconciliation is an encouragement for a brother or a sister to confess, apologize, and be reconciled. Jesus wants every member to work and build, not to destroy unity.
