Today we celebrate the feast of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. They are the leaders of Angels in the Army of God. These three archangels are mentioned in today’s scripture reading from the book of Revelation. St. Michael is usually depicted as a Warrior, St. Gabriel as a messenger and St. Raphael as a healer.
The name of every Angel ends in “El” which means God is present in the angels. These Archangels also remind me of my mission as a disciple to be a defender of the church. I can then proudly rejoice with the psalmist saying, ‘in the sight of the angels, I will sing your praise Lord.’
The gospel brings us to awareness that the things that happen in our daily lives are graces coming from an Unseen God. In John 20:29, Jesus said to the apostles, “blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” Philip’s role in the Gospel is exemplary for he leads Nathanael to Jesus. The Archangels of heaven also bring people closer to God. Can I be like Philip and the archangels who lead people closer to God?
