Readings: Heb 2: 5-12; Mk 1: 21-28
The author of Hebrews reflects on the glory of Jesus Christ, quoting Psalm 8, which originally describes the glory of humanity but is ultimately applied to Jesus, the perfect expression of humanity. God did not place the world to come under the control of angels, but rather under the authority of humanity. Jesus, made lower than the angels for a short time, endured suffering. Through this suffering, he was crowned with glory and honour, and he tasted death for everyone. Through his death, Jesus brought many sons and daughters to glory, making us part of God’s family.
In the gospel, Jesus demonstrates his authority and power by teaching and healing in the synagogue at Capernaum. His teaching is marked by authority, and his healing by power. Jesus is not just a wise teacher or skilled healer; He is the Son of God, bringing salvation and redemption to humanity. The people were amazed by his teaching, and his healing transformed the demon-possessed man. As Jesus teaches and heals, he calls us to follow him, inviting us to leave behind our old ways and start a new journey with him.
Today, we also remember Saint Devasahayam Pillai, revered as a symbol of courage, conviction, and devotion to faith. His martyrdom inspired many to embrace Christianity, and he is honoured as India’s first lay martyr.
