Today we celebrate the feast of St. Mary Magdalene, the Apostle of the Apostles. This feast invites us to become radical followers of Christ with a lifelong commitment to love.
Today’s gospel presents Mary as a supreme example of the one who loves and believes. She was one of the last to leave Jesus at the cross and the first to attend the tomb. Her belief was a belief of love. She knew what Jesus had done for her and she loved him for that. It was her genuine love for the Lord that made her to go looking for him. When Jesus appeared to her, she recognized him not by the sight but by his voice and the word spoken by him.
So, it is with us today, we know the Lord by his word and his spirit. Jesus called her by name. He knows his sheep by name and his sheep know the sound of his voice. She left the tomb in haste to tell others about her great discovery “I have seen the Lord”. May her devotion and confession touch the heart and life of all of us.
