In the gospel reading, we see that some of the Sadducees who didn’t believe in resurrection were asking Jesus about resurrection. Jesus gives them a meaningful response to lead them to a deeper reflection. While there is a clear link between earthly life and after-life, the life after death is a new life in God. Jesus says that “our God is God not of the dead, but of the living, for to him everyone is alive.”
This statement of the Lord confirms life beyond death and gives us a realistic vision of the future. He tells us that our life in the future will be different from that of the present. Marriage and giving in marriage are necessities of earthly life. The life after death, the life in God, is different as we will be like angels where the need for privileges ceases and the need for God is the only one that will sustain. When we have God, there is everything. For him, we are all alive.
The scripture and God’s revelation guide us to trust in God’s infinite ways. God loves us and his friendship with us does not end with death, but he desires to share his life and Joy with us for all eternity. St Paul summarizes his conviction in these words: “No eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him.” Once again, we need to strengthen our belief in Jesus like St. Paul so that we may believe in our own resurrection.
