Readings: Gen 22:1-2, 9-13, 15-18; Rom 8: 31-34; Mk 9:2-10
The readings of the day invite me to reflect upon the theme ‘LISTEN TO HIM.’ In the first reading, we see Abraham and God. God asked Abraham to offer his only son. Abraham listened, believed, and obeyed the word of God. Though it was difficult for him, he accepted God’s plan in his life. Later, God blessed him abundantly and he is now the Father of faith. In the gospel reading the voice of God invites me to listen to his son, Jesus Christ by saying “This is my son, the beloved. Listen to him.”
Listening is an art, and it is important in everyone’s life. I need to listen carefully to whatever is told to me. Jesus confronted the Pharisees and scribes the law keepers. They defended the law and were faithful to it.
But Jesus was angry with them because they did not understand the spirit of the law. For example, there is a phrase in the Bible – ‘Keep my word before your eyes.’ The Pharisees used to write the word of God and tie it right in front of their eyelashes. These are the foolish practices of the Pharisees that Jesus condemned.
Today Jesus speaks to me through the word of God that I must listen to his word and put it into practice in my daily life and in doing so I may come closer to God.
During this time of Lent, let us make a little more effort than usual to correct ourselves in situations that are needed for our growth. We shall also make it a point to read the word of God, which gives the basic instructions to live a life that is pleasing to him. Let our small deeds of good work during this lent make us reflect on the sufferings of Jesus as well as help us to listen to his voice and go closer to him.
