Readings: Ezek 16: 1-15, 60, 63; Mt 19:3-12
Today’s readings invite us to reflect on God’s love and faithfulness despite human frailty.
The first reading depicts Jerusalem as an abandoned infant rescued and nurtured by God, symbolizing his deep love and commitment despite Israel’s unfaithfulness. Despite Jerusalem’s spiritual adultery, God promises to remember his covenant and restore her, showing his enduring love.
In the gospel, Jesus teaches about the sacredness and permanence of marriage, affirming it as God intended from the beginning. He responds to the Pharisees’ question on divorce by emphasizing that it goes against God’s original intention, except in cases of sexual immorality.
Jesus challenges cultural norms and reaffirms the sanctity of marriage, while also introducing celibacy as a voluntary choice for those devoted entirely to God’s service. Both passages call us to reflect on our relationships with God and others, urging us to align our lives with God’s purposes and values.
As St. John Paul II said, “God’s love does not impose burdens upon us, but rather allows us to be relieved of our burdens, to be free.” Let us strive to live in accordance with his love and faithfulness.
