Live Under God’s Authority so that We May Know True Peace

Readings: Dan 7:13-14, Rev 1:5-8; Jn 18:33b-37

Today, our Church celebrates the solemnity of Christ the King.

The readings invite us to reflect on the theme “Living under God’s authority.” This authority differs from worldly authority; God’s authority seeks the peace, joy, and happiness of all people, leaving no room for hatred and selfishness. In the first reading, the prophet Daniel proclaims that the Son of Man is coming on the clouds of heaven, emphasizing that his dominion is eternal, and his kingdom will never be destroyed. In the second reading, St. John describes Jesus Christ as a faithful witness and ruler of the kings of the earth.

In the Gospel, Jesus stands before Pilate, affirming his divine authority and declaring that His kingdom is spiritual, existing beyond earthly realms. Pope Francis reminds us, “A Christian is not someone who lives in a bubble; he or she is a person who lives in the world, who lives in a community.” This calls us to actively embody God’s authority in our lives.

Similarly, St. John Paul II said, “Freedom consists not in doing what we like, but in having the right to do what we ought.” Today’s readings encourage each of us to live under God’s authority so that we may experience true peace in our lives.
