Readings: 1 Jn 4: 7-16; Jn 11: 19-27
Today, the Mother Church remembers St. Martha of Bethany, a close and caring friend of Jesus. In the first reading, we are called to love one another. Our God is a loving and compassionate God, always teaching us to love as he loves us. His love is unconditional and freely given, encouraging us to share our love freely as well. Love can make us like our Lord because it knows no boundaries. There are times when we fail to see the love of our near and dear ones, judging them with a critical mind.
But today, the Lord invites us to abide in his love, which helps us to see and treat others as beloved. In the gospel reading, Martha reveals her faith in Jesus, and in response, Jesus reveals that he is the resurrection and the life. He assures that those who believe in him will live even though they die. Jesus is the true manna from heaven, giving eternal life. He provides us with a clear understanding of who he is.
Sometimes, we tend to portray ourselves as the most faithful followers of Jesus yet feel hesitant to boldly proclaim our faith in him. Jesus calls us to proclaim our faith boldly, like Martha, saying, “Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Messiah.” We need to rely on the divine power of Jesus, for he alone leads us to eternal life. As we reflect on St. Martha’s example and Jesus’ teachings, let us strive to live in his abiding love and boldly proclaim our faith.
