Readings: Heb 5:1-10; Mk 2:18-22
In today’s reading from Hebrews, the author highlights the unique nature of Christ’s priesthood. Unlike other priests, Christ is perfect, yet he shares our humanity and understands our weaknesses. Like other priests, he was called by God, not choosing this path for himself. He prayed for strength, particularly as he approached his death. This shows us his deep reliance on God, offering us a powerful example of faith and humility.
In the gospel, the Pharisees challenge Jesus for not fasting as they do. Jesus responds that his disciples do not fast because he is with them. When he is gone, they will fast. Christ, who lived as one of us, knows our struggles and is always ready to help when we call upon him. Pope Francis reminds us, “Prayer is the breath of faith.”
Just as Jesus prayed to the Father in times of joy and sorrow, we too must make prayer a constant part of our lives, trusting that God is always with us, especially in our moments of need. We are called to follow Jesus’ example of relying on God in all circumstances, seeking his strength through prayer and remaining faithful to him in both times of joy and difficulty. Let us be encouraged by Christ’s perfect priesthood and his compassionate presence in our lives.
