Kharguli (Guwahati): An emergency meeting of the Assam Christian Forum (ACF) was held at North East Diocesan Social Forum (NEDSSS), Kharguli on Wednesday, to discuss some burning issues that needed immediate intervention.
After the meeting, a delegation of ACF members led by its chairman, vice chairman general secretary and spokesperson along with Church leaders representing all districts of Assam and Christian denominations met the Additional DGP of Assam, Hiren Chandra Nath, IPS in his office at Kahilipara SB HQ to discuss and resolve the issues faced by the Church and its people.
The delegation discussed the current situations in North East India and Manipur particularly and its impact in Assam too. The delegation also raised concerns regarding a circular served to Churches in Dima Hasao to submit profile/data of Churches by the police department and the chaos and confusion that it has created. Additional DGP clarified that it was an inadvertent mistake and that it has been canceled and withdrawn. He assured the delegation that it will not be pursued further and that he would make sure such instances do not occur. He further informed that when he convenes a meeting with all the SPs of Assam next time he would take up the matter and make sure the mistake is not repeated.
According to Allen Brooks, Spokesperson, Assam Christian Forum, the border issues between Assam and Meghalaya at Khundali, which has a large Christian population on both sides and is in the eye of a storm, was discussed. Further, issues relating to Dima Hasao, Karbi Anglong, Bodoland and Upper Assam was also raised by the leaders from that area, with assurance given to us that it would be looked into.
Finally, the meeting ended with a prayer lead by Rev. Bernard Marak the ACF VP and Gen Secretary ACF, as all prayed for God’s continued blessings upon the people of North-East India especially Manipur. They also prayed for the Govt and the Police who maintain law and order in the state so that they may be guided by God’s grace and wisdom while exercising their responsibilities.
