Guwahati: Concerned citizen organisations came together and urged for peace in the violence-hit state of Manipur, and also appealed to people to shed violence and attacks on places of worship.
A collaborative meeting of the Joint Peace Mission Team (JPMT) North-East India, the
Nagaland Joint Christian Forum (NJCF) Nagaland and Concerned Citizens for Peace in the
region have expressed deep anguish and painful perplexity at the great tragedies that have
recently befallen in the neighbouring state of Manipur.
In a press note, His Grace Thomas Menamparampil, Archbishop Emeritus of Guwahati and Chairman, JPMT; and Allen Brooks, Spokesperson JPMT stated, “In solidarity we grieve with our brothers and sisters who have fallen victims to violence and have immensely suffered in consequence. We also convey our deepest condolences to all those who have lost their near and dear ones to this human carnage. Indeed, the situation in Manipur is greatly frightening and escalating to proportions of a huge humanitarian crisis.”
Recognising the difficulties in the prevalent situations, the meeting exhorts members of the different communities in tensions to explore constructive ways of easing the circumstances and moving forward. “We hope that they would be able to find ways of settling the differences and hold on to the values of the distant past where models of collaborative conduct and inter-community engagement prevailed with the knowledge that the destinies of all our human communities are intertwined with each other. We also hope that our brothers and sisters would be able to find wisdom, courage and sacrifice so that the future generations would be thankful for the sobriety and balanced intervention manifested now even in the midst of distress and grief,” the note added.
