May He Fill Us With His Spirit

Readings: Acts 6: 1-7; Jn 6: 16-21

In the second week of the Easter season, through the readings, we are reminded of Jesus’ ability to calm our fears and provide us with the strength to navigate life’s storms. We see in the first reading that Stephen was being chosen—a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit.

When we are filled with his spirit, we are not afraid to stand for truth, just like Stephen, who was chosen to be his instrument. And when we are away from God, our hearts are filled with fear, just like the disciples in the gospel who were filled with fear because of the storms, and Jesus appeared to them and strengthened their faith.

In our lives too, we experience being called by the risen Lord, just as he has chosen Stephen to bear his witness. And we too are called to be his witnesses, to witness his love to all humanity. It is not easy to bear his witness or to become the channel of peace in this world, where people exploit each minority, and the rich look down on the poor.

Therefore, we may face storms like the disciples, who faced storms and were filled with fear because Jesus was not with them. But then Jesus assured us that he would not leave us alone. We can trust that Jesus is with us, even in the midst of chaos, and he will guide us safely through any challenges we face. Just as he has filled Stephen with his spirit, he will fill us with his spirit.
