In today’s gospel, Jesus thanks his Father for revealing him to infants. The word ‘infant’ means simple and innocent people. It is a genuine expectation that those who are in authority or hold power should be gentle and humble. As a seminarian I always expected formators to be down-to-earth priests.
Humility is a path to experience God. Jesus was humble from the incarnation to the resurrection. He admired the little acts of people. He spoke highly about the woman who put two copper coins (Mk 12:43). He marveled at the Syro-phoenician woman’s faith. God reveals himself in simple gestures, but we expect wonders. It is a daily struggle to grow into such a level of spirituality, yet it is possible. We lack the humility to see God’s work in our lives. Jesus, the mighty king became simple to glorify God.
The simplicity of life is not always appreciated. In good conscience, many volunteered to feed people in the pandemic, but their deeds were not recognized. Their acts gained negative comments on social media. As followers of Christ, let us appreciate the simple people who live the gospel values in their little ways. May the spirit of the Lord inspire that we acknowledge the genuine works of the people of goodwill.
