Readings: Gen 37: 3-4, 12-13a, 17b-28; Mt 21: 33-43, 45-46
‘Have you never read in the scriptures: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord’s doing, and it is amazing in our eyes’? (Mt 21:42)
Both readings of the day portray the reward that awaits when we are unjustly rejected by others, and we become a blessing for them in the later days. We do experience sometimes rejection; it is hard to deal with that pain. But this hurt and anger we feel can turn into a “holy sorrow” which has the effect of motivating us toward a deeper love for those who did us wrong. This is challenging but Joseph and Jesus have shown that it is possible.
Today, let us reflect upon the deep truth that rejection can be potentially a gift because it all depends on how we ultimately respond. Jesus responded with perfect love when he cried out, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” This act of perfect love during his ultimate rejection enabled him to become the “Cornerstone” of our salvation. Therefore, we are called to imitate this love and to share in his ability to not only forgive, but also to offer love and mercy. When we do this, we also become blessings of love and grace for those who have rejected us.
At times we reject our Lord through our words and actions. Let us become aware of those moments and accept him as our Lord and Saviour. This season of lent may become a turning point in our life that we may become beloved sons and daughters of our Lord and respond with love to those who reject us, thus, becoming a blessing to one another.
