Readings: Jer 26: 11-16, 24; Mt 14: 1-12
The readings of today put before us the challenges that come on our way in trying to become true prophets. We find true prophetic roles of Jeremiah and John the Baptist. In the first reading we see prophet Jeremiah boldly prophesying and asking the people to mend their immoral ways by listening to the voice of their God.
In the gospel reading we find John the true prophet standing for truth and justice and questioning Herod the tetrarch, for marrying his brother’s wife.
In daily life our ministry is demanding and challenging as well. As a religious I am also called to be a prophet in doing my ministry.
There is lot of injustice surrounding me. It could be within my community or outside in the society. Knowing that acts of immorality and injustice are happening, I have ignored challenging the people who were the cause for them.
Sometimes I have become an agent of unjust practices. In both ways I have failed to become a true prophet. It could be because of my selfishness, Jealousy, hatred and pleasing attitude.
However, through the examples of the prophets Jeremiah and John the Baptist, God invites me to mend my relationship with him, by becoming a true prophet. That is to challenge oneself and others, and by becoming an agent of hope, love, joy and peace in various life situations.
