In the Gospel Jesus presents two parables about the kingdom of heaven. When we apply these parables to our personal life, these would give us two essential virtues. They are renunciation and longing.
The parable of the hidden treasure is a call to renounce everything to possess Jesus and his kingdom. The parable of the one in search of the pearls is a call to have an intense thirst and longing for Jesus and his kingdom. Therefore, these parables help us to understand our spiritual need, which is fulfilled in Jesus.
The treasure in the parable is Jesus, who is the totality of God’s love and life. But to possess this treasure (Jesus), one must be faithful to God till the end and in all circumstances. This is the lesson Jeremiah learned. In the reading, we see Jeremiah asking, “why is my pain unceasing, my wound incurable, refusing to be healed?’
In his ministry he experienced many difficulties and struggles. But later, he began to experience the treasure of God’s strength, which was hidden in his painful events.
Therefore, in our spiritual journey it is necessary to have renunciation and longing, which will help us to bear difficulties and struggles in life. When we are faithful to God till the end and in all circumstances, we can possess Jesus. By possessing Jesus we experience peace and joy in our hearts.
