Readings: 2 Kgs 24: 8 – 17; Mt 7: 21 – 29
Today’s readings remind us that our actions should speak louder than our words.
The first reading is relevant to our world today, as many of us fail to fulfil our promises. The leadership of King Jehoiachim was taken over by Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, because Jehoiachin disobeyed God and did what was evil in his sight.
In the gospel, Jesus invites us to listen to his words and act on them. He calls us to walk our talk. St. Ignatius wrote, “Love ought to manifest itself more by deeds than by words,” which is true for anyone who decides to follow Christ. The foundation of our relationship with God must grow in strength and be revealed through our actions. We speak enough in our daily lives. Can we pause our speaking and start doing more important things for God’s people on earth?
Let us take the example from the gospel reading of building our house on the rock, which symbolizes actions founded on the blessings of the Lord. Let us watch our words and bring them to life in our daily situations. The Lord we worship is the Word made flesh and dwelt among us. So, let us pray for the grace of obedience to the Lord so that we may have the courage to demonstrate our faith through our actions.
