Prepare to Receive Him with Joy

Readings: Bar 5: 1-9; Phil 1: 4-6,8-11; Lk 3: 1-6

In the first reading, the prophet Baruch delivers a message of hope, as God promises to restore the people of Israel, bringing salvation and the renewal of life to all. The imagery of mountains being levelled and valleys being filled signifies that God will clear the path for Israel’s return, removing obstacles and ensuring their safe journey. This reflects God’s divine intervention and care for His people, guiding them back to His grace.

In the second reading, St. Paul prays that the Philippians’ love may abound more and more, accompanied by knowledge and insight, so they can discern what is best for them. St. Paul emphasizes that God is actively working in their lives, calling them to live in love, wisdom, and righteousness, all for the glory of God.

In the gospel reading we see John the Baptist travels throughout the region of the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. His ministry fulfils the prophecy of Isaiah, which speaks of a voice crying out in the wilderness to prepare the way for the Lord. This passage reveals John’s role in preparing people’s hearts for the coming of Jesus, urging them to repent and believe in God’s salvation.

As we are in the season of Advent, these readings call us to prepare our hearts by levelling the heights of discrimination, envy, and jealousy, making room for the joy of welcoming the Christ child. Advent invites us to reflect on how we can open our lives to the love and peace that Jesus brings, preparing ourselves to receive Him with joy and humility.
