Reach Out to Isolated, Helpless

Readings: 1Cor 4: 6b-15; Lk 6: 1-5

In today’s gospel reading, we see that Jesus goes beyond the laws and ordinances regarding Sabbath and gives importance to human life. Of course, laws are important in our lives. We may have to change them to adapt to the needs. Sometimes, we may need to give priority to human lives than laws.

Today, Jesus tells us that laws should not prevent us from doing good, especially saving lives. Every living being has the right to live and we have the responsibility to care for them. Nobody should suffer because of strict observance of laws.

During this pandemic, some of our neighbors may be hungry. The question is, can I reach out to them amidst the lockdown and restrictions? Or can I give a meal to the poor and needy who come to my house for food, by pushing myself out of my comfort zone? Jesus did not say that laws or Sabbath are not important but warned that they should not overtake the value of life. We need to genuinely care for the lives of those who are hungry.

Hunger may not be only for food but also for a helping hand for those who are feeling isolated, helpless, or anxious amidst problems. The reading invites us to be nourished well in order to nurture others with words, thoughts and actions which are rooted in Christ.
