The Gospel passage today directs our attention to the opening words of the Gospel of Mark which declares, “Jesus Christ, the Son of God.” The Son of God walked on this earth in a manner distinct from anyone before Him. He shared meals and spent time with people who were considered outsiders, enemies, and sinners. The gospels are replete with stories of individuals encountering Jesus, and their lives are profoundly transformed.
They experience forgiveness, healing, and an open heart to be with God. In today’s gospel, Mark invites us to comprehend the power and authority of the Son of God. The narrative highlights the life-changing impact of encountering Jesus. The demon-possessed man undergoes a radical transformation from a state of torment and isolation to being clothed and in his right mind. Mark wants us to understand the profound change that can occur through encounters with Jesus.
While the desire for life transformation is commendable, true and lasting change only comes through encountering Jesus. By embracing Jesus, we open ourselves to a life filled with his joy, abundance, and healing. Let us follow Jesus, prioritizing others above all else. Through prayer, may we seek the ability to perceive the needs of others, turning our focus away from ourselves and our preconceptions, and opening our eyes to reach out to others in love and compassion.
