Readings: Acts 1:1-11; Eph 1:17-23; Lk 24:46-53
Today, we celebrate the solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. The liturgy of the word emphasizes two important things on this special day. The first one is glory where Lord Jesus Christ is taken into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father as a king.
The second one is when Jesus assures the assistance of the Holy Spirit for the disciples. There are two accounts of the Ascension of the Lord from the Acts of the Apostles and the gospel of Luke.
Both these readings speak about Ascension of the Lord and the coming of the Holy Spirit. The letter to the Ephesians today gives a comprehensive idea about Jesus’ mission. We are invited to wait patiently, to prepare oneself to receive the promise of the Lord.
We need to wait patiently by worshiping God with joy in Christ Jesus. We need to prepare ourselves continually by praising and praying in the name of Jesus with humility. When we do these, surely, we are ready to receive the Holy Spirit, who will guide us in Jesus’ mission.
Our daily prayer and attending regular Eucharistic celebration play an important role in preparing ourselves. In our life, the assistance of the Holy Spirit is important to make our spiritual life fruitful. Because the Holy Spirit will guide us to what God wants us to be in our life. Therefore, let us patiently wait by preparing ourselves to receive the promise of Jesus with humility.
