Gaudium et Spes from Vatican II asks us to try to interpret the signs of the times in the light of the gospel. Obviously, it is very important, but not easy. In the gospel Jesus rebukes the people as they can discern weather but cannot read the signs of the times and recognize him as the Messiah. As today’s world is progressing with scientific advancements, we can predict weather and discern the other physical matters of the world.
However, when it comes to spiritual matters, we do not take time to observe nor to understand the realities of the spiritual world. Jesus had healed the sick, casted out demons and raised the dead, etc. Nevertheless, they failed to accept Jesus and his teachings. Thoughtful and genuinely spiritual people could see the signs that point to Jesus, some had seen them such as Simeon and Anna.
Therefore, let us introspect to see what makes us to become spiritually blind, deaf, and dumb, that we fail to experience the wonders and works of Christ in our lives. Let us ask the Lord to help us to be attentive and recognise the signs of his presence in our midst.
