In today’s gospel reading, we find Mary, the mother of Jesus, visiting the house of Elizabeth. Elizabeth calls Mary as the mother of the Lord because she knew that the child which Mary was carrying was of God.
She acknowledges her own unworthiness, and declares that “blessed is she who believed that there would be fulfilment of what was spoken to her by the Lord.” As a virgin, Mary believed in the promise of God and accepted God’s will. She became God-centered which made her to be a true disciple of God. God also promises to make us his true disciples just as Mary and Elizabeth. God tells us through scriptures to follow Jesus.
But the question is, are we really following Jesus? Are we living the gospel today? And are we following his way of truth and life? It is an invitation for us to see Jesus with the eyes of faith. Mary became a true disciple of Jesus. Though she could have worried about herself, out of her concern she moved without hesitation towards Elizabeth to help her. Her visit brought the light of Christ. When we have faith in God, impossible things will be possible. Many of us fail to trust in God’s Providence, hesitate to help others, not have the readiness to accept others, and do not share joy with others.
How blessed are we that God always comes to us, finds us, seeks us, and saves us? As we are in the fourth Sunday of Advent, let us pray that our waiting for the Lord may bring us joy and that he may dwell deep in our hearts so that we may be able to recognize his presence in daily events of our life.
