Readings: 1 Kgs 18: 41 – 46; Mt 5: 20 – 26
The readings offer powerful messages about God’s providence. God provides for the righteous, who are rooted in love. The story of Elijah’s prayer for rain on Mount Carmel illustrates God’s faithfulness in meeting his people’s needs, even during drought and difficulty. It reminds us to trust in God’s timing and to persist in prayer, knowing that he hears and answers our petitions according to his will.
In the Gospel passage, Jesus challenges his disciples to a deeper righteousness that goes beyond mere external observance of the law. He emphasizes the importance of cultivating love, reconciliation, and forgiveness in our relationships, highlighting the transformative power of genuine righteousness rooted in love for God and neighbour.
These readings invite us to reflect on God’s faithfulness and provision and to embrace his love and righteousness in our lives, especially in our interactions with others. True righteousness, according to Jesus, means remaining in his love and demonstrating that love through forgiveness, helping, caring, and listening. Today, let us ask the Lord for the courage to forgive those who hurt us, reconcile with those who harm us, and listen to those who lighten their burdens by sharing with us.
