As we are in the Advent season, waiting for the messiah who brings joy, peace, and love to everyone, the gospel reading of the day invites us to be the persons who give and share love and peace in the family and community, no matter what kind of family and lineage we are from.
The genealogy of Jesus given in today’s gospel gives us the understanding that Jesus, though perfect didn’t descend from a perfect family. There were many good and not so good people as his ancestors. Many of them didn’t manifest the love and purity of God. However, Jesus made a difference and introduced a new way of life for the world.
Similarly, God calls us to make a difference in our families and life situations for a better life and for the glory of God. For God what matters is not our family background, but the inner disposition and a life of commitment.
Today, we are inspired to have the understanding that no one can be considered as bad or insignificant in this world. Everyone has the potential to bring healing and hope into this world. Therefore, during this season of advent let us rejoice over the gift of our own lineage and do whatever is required to become effective instruments in enabling the people to experience the salvific grace revealed in Jesus.
