Today the church remembers John Mary Vianney, the patron of all priests. This holy priest’s life story reveals that the God’s measure of success is different from that of the world. Even though he had a humble background, he was able to transform the hearts and the lives of so many people because he enabled them to experience the Lord’s merciful love.
In today’s gospel we see Jesus experiences rejection from his hometown. According to his neighbors he lacked proper credentials and educational qualifications. He was from humble beginnings. His family was humble and ordinary. Their prejudices prevented them from understanding the source of Jesus wisdom and power. So, they rejected him. Like Jesus, John Mary too had faced rejection in many ways because of his poor credentials. But by relying on the grace of God he was able to transcend over his limitations and humble beginnings to become an exemplary priest who changed his town and even the world.
In our reading from the Book of Leviticus the Lord communicates to Moses about the solemn festivals which are to be held by the Jewish people each year. These celebrations are important reminders each year for the people of all that the Lord has done for them. May the feast of St. John Vianney reminds us of all God’s blessings that the Church has received through him.
