“From the equality of rights springs identity of our highest interest; you cannot subvert your neighbour’s rights without striking a dangerous blow at your own” – Carl Shurz.
Today, the first reading speaks to me about how my life is uncertain and unsaved until it is led by the plans of God. There is nothing that I own for myself for I am just a guest here on earth.
The gospel tells me that there is no one against whom I am to speak in the name of the Lord, but that I am to treat all living beings equally for every being is created by God. Today, the gospel passage is challenging me because Jesus calls me to work with all kinds of people, regardless of their caste, culture, language, religion and so on.
But then, I ask myself how I can practice them now because I presently live in a community where all differences do not exist. Reflecting over the reading, I find that there are many things through which I can practice them. Sometimes, I find myself as a choosy person, where I like giving priority to my own group than others.
Sometimes, I give more importance to those familiar to me than others, and I treat them accordingly. And there are many other things that I can go on with, but today Jesus is telling me to stop such kind of polluted thoughts within me and start treating people equally. Jesus asks me to reset my mind to start loving all my friends without hesitation right here in my community. Loving Jesus, help me to love them all equally.
