In today’s Gospel, Jesus’ humility is evident despite his widespread recognition and authority. Even the unclean spirit acknowledged him as the Son of God, but Jesus silenced it, prioritizing his mission over personal acclaim. This act resonates with the wisdom of Saint Teresa of Calcutta, who once said, “We can do no great things, only small things with great love.”
Jesus, in his humility, embraced the significance of small acts and selfless service. In a short time, Jesus gained fame among Jews and Gentiles, drawing people from afar. His humility is seen in sacrificing personal glory for the fulfilment of people’s needs, placing God’s will above immediate recognition.
The first book of Samuel illustrates Saul’s jealousy toward David’s popularity, leading to suspicion and fear. Jesus challenges us to find true greatness in selfless service and obedience to God, emphasizing humility as he invites us to learn from his meek and humble heart (Mt 11:29). Humility breaks selfish tendencies, fostering love for others without seeking praise. Cultivating gratitude, respecting diverse perspectives, and being open in learning to contribute to this selfless service, a daily offering reflecting the incredible humility of our Lord.
