Readings: Num 13:1-2, 25-14:1,26-29,34-35; Mt 15:21-28
Today’s readings invite us to examine our faith in God. The first reading speaks about the lack of faith of the people of Israel. Even though they were blessed abundantly they grumbled against God. In the Gospel we see the great faith of the Canaanite woman, which makes Jesus not only to heal her daughter but also to compliment her faith by saying, “Woman, great is your faith!”
We see the persistent faith of the Canaanite woman which overcomes all barriers of the society that block her to experience Christ. She knew what she wanted and had faith in the power of Jesus that he can heal her daughter, no matter what the people might say about her.
Many questions come to our mind if God becomes silent before our supplications and requests. However, we understand that our God is a living God who never abandons anyone who turns to him with faith. He never let us down, sometimes, delays in forming us so that our faith might be strengthened and deepened in him.
The second Vatican Council wants us to understand that our faith is a response to the goodness of God, which involves trust and commitment to accept his grace to do his will in our daily lives. (DV. 5) May we respond to Lord’s goodness with a spirit of humility and surrender.
