Readings: Ezek 34:11-16, Rom 5:5-11, LK 15:3-7
Today, we celebrate the solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is a solemnity that calls us to reflect on the love of God that is visible to us
through Jesus Christ.
God’s love is far different from a human understanding of love. Why is his heart wounded? Through the Gospel of John 15:13, Jesus tells me, “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” These words of Jesus challenge me for his love is everlasting when he laid down his life for me, my brothers, and
sisters. Jesus himself showed me that love is not only in words but in actions. This is what I believe when I look into his wounded heart which expresses his unconditional love to me. I ask myself; ‘am I really open to him who longs for me to come to his heart and abide with him?’
As we see in the first reading, God himself takes care of the sheep and seeks those who are out of his flock. This shows how much God really loves his people, despite people going astray. He calls them back to have a relationship with him and relate with him, from the time of the people of Israel till this time.
Many times I have gone away from the love of God. I take even this gift of life for granted which is the symbol of the love of God to me. When I reflect on this feast, I can see myself as one of the sheep which had gone away from the flock.
In a way, this feast gives me an assurance that his sacred heart is burning with love for me. As St. Paul tells us that God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, I pray that I may live and work for the glory of God and see the image of God in one another.
