In today’s gospel, we see people coming to Jesus looking for signs. He compares himself to Solomon and Jonah – who were signs from God to the people in their lifetime.
We all seem to ask and look for signs from time to time, for they seem to give us greater certainty in what we believe. Apparitions, miracles, and other sensational events seem to be important not only for the contemporaries of Jesus but also for us. Yet Jesus insists that he is the sign and in him, God has become a human being, and whoever sees him sees the Father. Looking for other signs will not get us anywhere but only can lead to worldly possessions. However, Jesus the word who became flesh and dwelt among us is the full revelation of the Father in heaven.
How am I becoming a sign of God? Where do I see ‘signs’ of God’s activity in my life? Let us see the signs of God in nature; family; friends; and also become a sign for others. What are the signs in our life that are leading us to Jesus? Who are our advisors and whose voice do we listen to when we think about the deep meaning of our life?
