Today’s gospel is one of the passages where Jesus is being charged with breaking the law of Sabbath. Firstly, our approach to scriptures should be open minded. We need to understand that scriptures are as way to know the will of God; for God speaks to us through scriptures rather than regarding it as a textual proof for our arguments and criticisms.
Secondly, as we read the scriptures, our attitude needs to be like that of Samuel, “Speak, Lord for thy servant is listening” instead of “Listen Lord for thy servant is speaking”.
The Sabbath is a time for us to take a short break from our routine and spend time in solitude with the Lord. Let us ask ourselves, how do we use our Sabbath? Do we celebrate the Sabbath or merely celebrate its rules and regulations?
Sabbath is not a measure of rules and regulations to control us in following Christian values. Instead, the Sabbath is to live in love, the love of God, the love of others and to live in Jesus, who is love itself. So, let us seek the grace of God that the rules may not stop us from loving God and others through our words and deeds.
