Seek God’s Grace to be Generous With Our Words

John Desing csc –

Readings: Heb 7:1-3,15-17; Mk 3:1-6

Today we are called to be a generous giver. The first reading talks about Melchizedek, a priest of God and king of Salem, that is, king of peace. When Melchizedek came to meet Abraham, after
defeating the kings, he gave a tenth of everything he had. And Abraham showed his generosity by offering him what he could.

The Gospel passage narrates the healing of a man with a withered hand. Jesus, knowing the minds of the pharisees, asked them a question. Is it permitted on the sabbath day to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill? Following the rules and regulations but forgetting the purpose of them is a tragedy. Jesus went beyond the boundary of rituals and customs by healing the man on the Sabbath day, a day of rest. Jesus extends his healing power on this important day to show us that love has no boundary. We are called to cross all boundaries of hatred, division, and criticism.

The pharisees failed to see the struggle and pain of the sick man. They were only trying to trap and accuse Jesus. Let us examine ourselves, when others are in trouble or suffering how do I respond to them? Am I able to sympathize with them or do I ignore their presence? Let us ask the Lord to give us the grace to be generous with our words, and deeds supporting one another to grow together. May God who is just and loving to bless us all to love one another.
