In the gospel passage, when Jesus speaks of the narrow gate, he emphasizes that salvation is not a guaranteed outcome. It depends on our active cooperation with his grace and our genuine effort to love God and follow his will. Obedience to God’s will is the best assurance of our salvation.
The door that Jesus refers to is himself: “I am the gate; if anyone enters by me, he will be saved” (Jn 10:9). Through the cross, Jesus opens the way for us to enter his kingdom, but we must follow him along the path of sacrifice. To enter the kingdom of God, we must struggle against temptation and other obstacles that hinder us from doing God’s will.
The good news is that we do not face these struggles alone. God is with us, and his grace is sufficient. Through the gift of his Body, the Church, and the support of one another in Christ, the Lord provides us with all the help we need to grow in holiness and overcome sin in our lives.
Jesus assures us of complete victory. Therefore, to enter that narrow door, we need to trust in God’s grace and assistance, especially during times of testing and temptation.
