Readings: Acts 5:34-42; Jn 6: 1-15
The feeding of five thousand people is an act of Jesus’ compassion towards the needy. He felt the need to provide food for them because he knew that they had run out of resources since they had been with him for three days and there was no way for them to get enough food.
This act of Jesus reminds us of the need to care and be concerned for the poor and needy. Jesus shows us the example to respond to the needy and reminds all of us that it is in responding to their need will we find God. When we serve the least of his brethren, we are serving God.
When we show compassion for our fellow beings, we fulfil the mission of his Son Jesus Christ. Jesus, being human and divine, understood the feelings and emotions of the poor. He became one with them and shared everything that he had with them. As believers in Christ, we are called to become another Christ, to be compassionate and empathetic like him towards the poor.
Let us pray for the grace to see Christ in the poor, treat them as our brothers and sisters and reach out to them in their times of need. May the Spirit of the Lord give us the grace to be compassionate toward the needy.
