Today we celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. This feast reminds us about two important events from the scripture the purification of Mother Mary and the dedication of Child Jesus in the Temple.
In the first reading the words of Malachi assure us of the coming of a messenger who will present a pleasing sacrifice to God. This sacrifice, as revealed in the second reading from Hebrews, is embodied in Jesus, who, by sharing in our humanity, helps those undergoing trials and hardships. The gospel of Luke unfolds the moment when Simeon and Anna, guided by the Holy Spirit, recognize Jesus as the fulfilment of God’s promises- Simeon declaring him as the salvation of God, and Anna proclaiming him as the redemption of Israel.
The feast day of the day invites and challenges me to dedicate myself to God, to present my life for his service, and to seek purification of my thoughts and intentions through repentance and faith. Thomas Aquinas mentioned about Jesus that for our sake he was presented to the Lord that we may learn to offer ourselves to God.
I am invited through the presentation of my life to imitate Jesus who purifies me and sacrifices on my behalf. I am motivated to spread his love, compassion, and truth in the world. I am encouraged to proclaim Jesus as the salvation of God and redemption of my life. This great act demands of me the conversion of my habits, my character, my attitudes, and my desires.
