Readings: Acts 20:17-27; Jn 17:1-11a
What is the purpose of my life? We are sent into this world with a purpose as we see in the Acts of the Apostles. St. Paul gives us the best example to live and to strive for a purpose in life. He says, “Indeed, I put no value on my life; if only I can finish my race; and complete the service for which I have been assigned by the Lord Jesus, that is to announce the good news of God’s grace.”
Like Paul, each of us has been given a mission and a ministry by Jesus. He was not only preaching the Gospel, but he lived the Gospel. A task has been given to us and it will remain undone if we fail to do what has been given to us. All of us are unique and special in our own way which is why we do not need to compete with others, we need to run at our
own pace.
Jesus knew that his disciples would experience a tough time in this world because this world is hostile. In the same way, Jesus knows that we cannot fulfil our purpose in life even though we have the desire to do it, because the desire of the flesh makes us fall short and thus, we fail to do our responsibilities, and forget our purpose in life. That is the reason, Jesus in today’s Gospel prays for his disciples, and for the world.
He says, “I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and now I am coming to you.” Jesus, through your life and ministry, you have glorified the Father. So, give us the strength to continue His mission so that we might glorify Him here on earth.
