Seek to Understand the Plan of God

Readings: Dan 7:9-10, 13-14; 2 Pet 1:16-19; Mk 9:2-10

Today we celebrate the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. The three readings of the liturgy reflect on the ‘glory of the Son of man’. In the first reading, we see the characteristics of the Son of man with the everlasting kingship and kingdom.

In the second reading, St. Peter himself gives the testimony of being an eyewitness to the glorious event. In the gospel, God the Father assures that Jesus is his beloved son. We all like to go to hill stations to relax, rejuvenate, and take a break from the routine mechanized way of living. Jesus takes his beloved disciples to show something glorious for them.

It is in a way taking the disciples from their busy schedule to unwind them. There they experience the amazing things of seeing Elijah, Moses, and God the Father who bears witness by saying ‘This is my beloved son; listen to him.’ Jesus was in constant touch with the Father and confirmed God’s plan and will in his daily life. Many things were revealed to us in this event to understand God’s power and the importance of communion with the Father.

The external appearances may only impress, but the sublime knowledge of God will help us experience the dazzling power of the Lord. Jesus knew about his mission, so he moved forward, whereas Peter was caught up by mere attraction. On this day, let us pray that we may go beyond our visual/sensual attractions and understand the plan of God to be called his beloved son/daughter.
