Readings: Deu 26: 16-19; Mt 5: 43-48
In the first reading, the people of Israel are urged to keep and observe the commandments of the Lord diligently. The emphasis on wholehearted obedience is a call to a covenantal relationship with God. The reading highlights that by obeying God’s statutes, the people set themselves apart as his treasured possession.
In the gospel Jesus extends the concept of love beyond the boundaries of conventional relationships. He challenges his followers to love not only their neighbours but also their enemies. This radical form of love mirrors the completeness of God’s love, transcending human norms and expectations.
The readings become an invitation to transformative introspection. It urges us to assess the authenticity of our relationship with God and the depth of our love for others. It’s a call to shape our life in a way that not only reflects God’s grace but actively contributes to a community marked by radical love, compassion, and a genuine adherence to His commandment.
