“Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all the darkness”
We live in a world where family, relationship, charity, appreciation, hopes and love of God are becoming a laughingstock. We are becoming selfish and self-centered. We think money can buy everything and technology can solve all our problems. We have no time to stop and say ‘Hi! You did well and you can do better.’
The result of all these are suffering, war, violence, starvation, death, murder, and rape. We have a world of darkness within us and we have at the same time the light which can dispel that darkness within us. This is what we can see in today’s liturgy. In the first reading Paul gives hope to the Colossians. ‘However sinful your past life may be put to death all the darkness that is there in your heart. Strip off the oldness and cloth yourself with newness that Christ has given you.’
In the gospel reading Jesus blesses those who are poor, hungry, and those who weep to comfort others. Jesus blesses them not on the basis of their social merits and suffering instead their endurance, tolerance, patience and generosity. Jesus curses the rich because of their greed and selfishness. They always look after their own self. So today Jesus gives us an invitation to share and live a happy life.
