Today’s gospel reading tells us to examine and reflect about the disposition that we hold within us. In the eyes of our Lord external appearance does not matter, but what we have inside our heart. “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not see as man sees; man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on heart.” (1Sam 16:7)
HEART, HEAR, EAR, ART, our heart is to discover and hear through our ears the voice of God and his will for us, and this ability to listen to God’s voice is an art: an unique gift from God himself. He says, “when you pray, go into your room.” What does he mean? It means to go deep inside ourselves and see what sort of disposition we hold; to clear the things that disturb me from praying and doing good things; and to keep gazing at the things that make it easy to do good things and will of God.
“Close the door”: what does it mean? It means to close all the thoughts and outer disturbances that bothers me and makes it difficult to go near to God. Clear all dispositions that are unhealthy, and approach God with an innocent heart. These kinds of actions help us to cultivate a healthy spiritual life. Without looking into our own life and disposition that we hold, it is not easy to listen to his voice and share the love of God with others.
