Through the parable of the talents Jesus teaches us that we are given tasks in proportion to our abilities, and that we are expected to deliver within that proportion. God does not expect more than this, but he certainly does not approve if we deliver less than what is expected of us. Comparing our deliverability with that of those who delivered more can often lead to feelings of being overwhelmed and paralyzed. Another outlook that has caused us to underperform is the inclination to play safe and to avoid risk regarding what our potential can achieve.
The Lord detests stagnation. He wants us to push ourselves to a greater level of trustworthiness, so that we can be worthy partners in accomplishing his Kingdom. Pope Francis spoke about this parable of the talents in the context of stewardship and responsibility. He emphasized the importance of using one’s talents and gifts to serve others and fulfil God’s will. He encourages people to use their talents to make a positive impact on the world and to help those in need.
He also stressed on the importance of not burying one’s talents but rather multiplying and sharing them to bring about social Justice, compassion, and love for one’s neighbours. Let us not compare ourselves with others but excel in sharing our talents to create a better world for everyone.
