Readings: 2 Cor 1:18-22; Mt 5: 13-16
The readings of today are challenging us to take a bold step, that is to be salt and light of this earth. In the first reading, St. Paul tells us that through Jesus we have found answer to all God’s promises.
In the gospel reading, Jesus is using the metaphor of salt and light to make us understand the value of human life. Life is the greatest gift that we have received from God. Along with life, God also has blessed each one of us with many gifts and talents to live a happy life and contribute to the society for the common good of people, especially for those who live around us.
If salt loses its saltiness, it is of no use. A city built on a hilltop cannot be hidden. In the same way, our abilities and gifts have to be made use of for the good of oneself and others, otherwise it is of no use. The moment we start investing in our gifts and talents, they start multiplying day by day. The more we invest, the more we gain from them.
In every little act of our day-to-day life, we need to glorify the name of God, for all his blessings. In case we fail to make use of our talents, it is like deceiving oneself. It is time for us to recognize our gifts and work on them. All of us are interested in improving our gifts, but our laziness and lack of motivation become hurdles on the way. Let us ask the Spirit of the Lord to guide our way and strengthen us to be salt and light of this earth and to shine like stars in our society through our good deeds.
