Readings: Dan 13: 1-9, 15-17, 19-30, 33-62; Jn 8:1-11
Through today’s liturgy of the word we shall focus on the theme ‘Do not judge but show love and compassion’. In the reading, prophet Daniel narrates the story where two bad judges secretly want to have sex with Susanna, a beautiful and virtuous wife.
In the gospel, St. John speaks about the woman who has been brought to Jesus by the Pharisees, after being caught in the act of adultery. In those days it was considered a capital offense.
There is no question about whether she committed the act, so she is morally guilty. Jesus showed mercy and compassion to an adulterous woman. Then he encouraged her to sin no more. Here Jesus did not distance himself from the world, or from those that were trapped in sin. Instead, he showed them compassion, talked to them, and encouraged them to sin no more.
We all know how good it feels to be forgiven when we have done something wrong. The bigger the sin, the more relief we feel when that sin is forgiven. Therefore, here we learn to forgive and show love that Jesus shows us. There is no place for judgment in the life of a Christian. So our role is to show others the love and compassion of Jesus in all that we say and do. Let us not judge but show love and compassion to one another. Let us pray that we may show love and compassion to one another in our daily life.
