“The opposite of love is not hatred, it is indifference. If you hate someone, you still care,” says an unknown author. It is pretty much true in our life too. Sometimes, we fail to realize our indifference towards others in our daily life. On the other hand, we fail to distinguish between hatred and indifference in our actions.
Today, the liturgy of the word clearly states difference between the attitude of indifference and that of love. The first reading speaks about Paul’s deep sorrow and the pain of separation that he experienced from his fellow Jews. Paul was sure about the love and righteousness of God on the Israelites, but they failed to realize that Jesus was sent to save them from the darkness of sin.
The gospel is about the attitude of indifference of the Pharisees on the Sabbath and the loving attitude of Jesus on the sabbath. Jesus heals the man on the Sabbath. Mother Teresa is the best example for us to have an attitude of love over that of indifference. She showed love to all without any discrimination or indifference. Today, let us show love, not indifference, to everyone in our daily life.
