Readings: Rom 13:8-10; Lk 14:25-33
Today’s readings focus on the theme of love. To be an authentic disciple of Jesus, one must love him above everything, forgo fancy desires, wants, wealth, and possessions, and follow him by accepting daily crosses.
In the Gospel reading, it is mentioned that building a tower with no proper foundation will lead to disaster because inferior materials are used to build the tower. Here, the tower symbolizes the relationship with God. In the first reading, St. Paul gives a yardstick to measure and build a relationship with God by putting a concrete foundation on love.
To experience God’s love, he gives us a commandment that is above all commandments: “You shall love your God with all your heart and with all your soul; you shall love your neighbour as yourself.” We know that love does no wrong to anyone but rather enables us to build relationships. It is important to spread love and kindness wherever we go, just as Jesus Christ did during his time on earth.
