Today we celebrate the feast of St. Luke, evangelist. He was a physician and a native of Antioch in Syria. Tradition holds that he accompanied St. Paul in some of his missionary journey. In the letter to the Colossians (4:14) Paul calls him a ‘beloved physician’.

In today’s first reading St. Paul acknowledges St. Luke as a faithful friend who stood by him in the moments of difficulties. We are called to be reliable mission companions in the collaborated efforts of preaching the good news. In the gospel, Jesus sends out seventy-two disciples to the places where he himself must visit and preach. Some believed that Luke was a member of these seventy-two. Being a faithful disciple, he knew Jesus clearly and presented the merciful face of Jesus through his gospel. St. Luke used his writing skills for the evangelization.

The Lord wants us to use our skills for making him known, loved, and served. Let us follow the example of St. Luke and walk in the path which he has shown us, that we too may contribute to the mission the Lord has entrusted to the Church and to all of us.
